Dr. Thomas J. Fenlon and Howard County Family Dentistry has selected The Linwood Center, Inc. to receive 50 percent of the funds they will raise during the Crown Council's “Smiles for Life” campaign. Through a unique partnership with legendary entertainer Garth Brooks and his Teammates for Kids Foundation, the remaining 50 percent of the funds raised by Dr. Fenlon and other Crown Council members will go to children's charities in communities across North America.
During the four-month campaign, Crown Council members offer teeth whitening services at a significantly reduced rate. This is the third consecutive year that Dr. Fenlon and his Howard County Dental practice have participated in this event, which begins in March and lasts through June. Since joining the campaign, Dr. Fenlon and Howard County Family Dentistry have raised over $6,000. This year, the practice hopes to raise $10,000.
April is National Autism Awareness Month. This year, Dr. Fenlon chose to contribute to the Linwood Center, Inc. to help raise awareness about helping local children who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
"The teeth whitening procedure is quick and painless, with excellent results," explains Dr. Fenlon, a Crown Council dentist. "Most importantly, a few minutes in the chair can make an incredible impact on someone right here in Howard County who needs our help and support." Jeanne M. Simons (1909-2005) founded the Linwood Center (then, Linwood Children's Farm, and later, Linwood Children's Center) in 1955. Her early work with autistic children was unprecedented. Noted as one of the pioneers in the field of autism, Miss Simons worked with Dr. Leo Kanner, who, at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, developed the first child psychiatry service in a pediatric hospital. Dr. Kanner is noted to be the first to identify the syndrome, now known as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Jeanne Simons’ work, a.k.a., "The Linwood Method", is the basis for Linwood’s philosophy and methods as practiced today. Linwood is regarded by many as the premiere program addressing the needs of individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The Smiles for Life Foundation is the children's charity organization of the Crown Council, an organization of leading-edge dentists throughout North America. Dr. Fenlon has been in private practice in Howard County since 1976. A native Washingtonian, Dr. Fenlon attended St. John's College High School and completed undergraduate studies at Wheeling Jesuit College in Wheeling, West Virginia and the University of Maryland, College Park.
